Dear Parishioners,
Tonight, we celebrate the Easter Vigil. The season of Easter is the most important period of the liturgical year and consists of the fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost. The season begins with our Lord Jesus Christ’s triumph over death and subsequent resurrection and culminates in His ascension into Heaven and placement of the Holy Spirit upon our world. During the Easter season, we are filled with the joy of glorified life and Christ’s victory over death as we sing, “Alleluia, He is risen!”
The Light of Our World
The word “Easter” means “East” in old English. The sun rises in the East, and brings light, warmth, and joy to our world; the sun also represents the risen Jesus Christ, which is our true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle, which is kept by the ambo during the Easter season and is lit for all liturgical celebrations, is a central symbol of Christ’s divine Light.
The gradual illuminating of the Church from total darkness to fully lit during the Easter Vigil Mass offers an image of what happens when Christians submit their lives to Christ: the world is brightened with the glory of Christ. This also represents a challenge to us, for Jesus calls us as Christians to be the light of the world. We must go forth and shine His light upon others.
This Easter season, let us remember the story of Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus. He died, yet Jesus brought him back from the dead. Similar to this story, Jesus endured His Passion and Death, but after three days, He triumphantly conquered sin and death. We now celebrate the Risen Lord!
We at Holy Family Parish wish you a happy, healthy, and blessed Easter. We look forward to celebrating this Easter season with you all.
Yours in Christ,
Monsignor Sweeney
